Chauncey Ryder
"The Quiet of Winter" - American Postimpressionist, Landscape Artist

About the Item

Chauncey Foster Ryder (29 February 1868 – 18 May 1949) was a prominent American Postimpressionist landscape painter in the early 20th century, recognized for his unique green-gray palette dubbed 'Ryder green.' In 1907, Ryder relocated to New York City, where art dealer William Macbeth became his exclusive representative for the entirety of his career. Ryder's landscapes earned acclaim for their robust brushwork and the way he skillfully pushed representational elements toward abstraction. His distinctive palette, dominated by gray-green tones, eventually became known as 'Ryder green.' Creating works in both oil and watercolor, Ryder expanded his artistic repertoire around 1910 to include prints, such as lithographs, etchings, and drypoints, the latter showcasing remarkable economy of line. Establishing a studio in New York City in 1909, Ryder acquired property in Wilton, New Hampshire, the following year. From then on, he seamlessly divided his time between the urban vibrancy of New York and the tranquil landscapes of New Hampshire. In 1910, Ryder traversed New England, drawing inspiration for many subsequent paintings. That same year, future President Woodrow Wilson and his wife Ellen purchased one of Ryder's landscapes, "Valley of Assisi," to commemorate their 25th wedding anniversary. Actively engaged in the art community, Ryder was a member of esteemed art associations, including the American Water Color Society and the Society for Sanity in Art. His accolades included recognition at the Paris Salon (honorable mention, 1907), the American Water Color Society (gold medal), the National Arts Club (gold medal), and the New York Water Color Society (gold medal). Awards also came his way at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition and the 1937 Paris International Exposition. Ryder's artistic journey concluded in Wilton in 1949. His legacy endures through the inclusion of his works in the collections of numerous American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery (Washington, D.C.), the Art Institute of Chicago (Illinois), and the Baltimore Museum of Art (Maryland).
