Christian Zacho
Christian Zacho, A Still Standing Stream with Shading Trees and a Sunlit Opening

c.1900

About the Item

A still standing stream with shading trees and a sunlit opening over the water painted by Peter Mørch Christian Zacho (1843 - 1913). Oil on canvas laid on board. Signed C.Z. Probably painted in the late 19th century. Zacho was a Danish landscape painter that early on as a boy showed a great interest to draw. As a teenager he studied painting and drawing under the animal painter Emmerik Høegh-Guldberg, who encouraged him to study seriously and gave him a recommendation to Professor G.F. Hetsch in Copenhagen to seek further education. At Hetsch, Zacho drew for a time until he became a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1862. At the same time, he was taught painting under Janus la Cour. Later he became a student of P.C. Skovgaard, in whose house he lived for four years and benefited from the great master's guidance. In 1865 he made his debut at the exhibition at Charlottenborg. Very early on, especially in forest scenes, he showed considerable ability in the direction of clarity in the depiction and mastery of the form; he chose his subjects with taste and, like few of his peers, understood how to limit and round them off in such a way that the essentials were sufficiently emphasized, while the details, however, came into their own. His drawing of the lines of the terrain and of the tree forms was sure and elegant, the color clear and harmonious and the lecture, if sometimes somewhat pointed, as a rule lively and emotional. In 1871 Zacho received the Southern Encouragement Prize, in 1872 he was in Italy and in the following years several times in France. He spent the summers on study trips that stretched all the way down to the Pyrenees; in winter he painted under Léon Bonnat. Here and while living together with other significant artists, he came under the strong influence of the modern French view of nature and expression and developed significantly as a technician, gained greater power and brilliance in color, more breadth in his presentation. After returning to Denmark, he joined the circle of innovative literati and visual artists who met in the association Bogstaveligheden. In 1884 he received the exhibition medal for Et stille Vand i Dyrehaven; several times he obtained a traveling grant from the Academy, and still displayed a rich and much appreciated production; In 1891 he traveled again in France with the Ancker Legate; the same year he received honorable mention at the anniversary exhibition in Vienna. He received the title of professor in 1897.

Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career that lasted 17-years. Beginning in 1992, she studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike...
