About the Item

We are obsessed with the brilliance of Donald Beal's paintings, and we think you will be, too. The color and sense of light that unites all of his paintings project an unforgettable aura. "Donald Beal's work breaks new ground in a gentle but inviting manner; his use of color and light are only devices designed to accent his unique sense of observation. What sets Beal's expression apart from those of his predecessors, however, is the lens from which he gazes. His perspective of nature is, in a sobering yet enlightening style, reflective of himself." Donald Beal received an MFA from Parsons School of Design in 1983. In 1985 he moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he married photographer Khristine Hopkins.  He has been a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth from 1999 to 2015, and he continues to work and paint on Cape Cod and greater New England.

"Nature is a celebration of the mystery, promise, and complexity of life.  That is what I seek to capture in my work.  I am interested in the experience of light and shadow, color and texture, the play between the seen and the unseen, between memory and imagination. As with all things in nature, there is a moment that says everything: the rapidly changing quality of light and shade in a forest, reflections moving in water, the hummingbird that suddenly appears, pauses, and then disappears, butterflies fluttering through the atmosphere. My paintings are about these ephemeral moments." An Atlanta, Georgia native, Tracey Lane had her first solo exhibition in Atlanta in 2001.  Since that time, she has been shown in numerous exhibitions and has been represented by galleries in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and Santa Fe. Lane’s paintings have been featured in multiple publications, including American Art Collector and SouthwestArt Magazine, and her work is in collections all over the world. She is a fellow of The Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts & Sciences and holds a master’s degree in art history from Emory University.

Grace Graupe-Pillard has concentrated on portraiture since her early charcoal drawings which she exhibited at The Drawing Center, NYC in 1981. Her work, which has been exhibited at notable institutions such as MOMA PS1 and galleries including Cheim & Read Gallery (NY) and Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago), has evolved from over the years from pastels to large-scale oil paintings and installations of people who she describes as “having not been integrated into mainstream society.” Her more recent paintings, inspired by selfies and iPhone photographs, attempt to convey the vitality and diversity of 21st century contemporary culture while capturing the ineffable moments in our lives. “The sensuality and radiant beauty of youth and ethnic diversity are depicted in my choice of subjects, as well as the ravages of time which are imprinted on our being. All stages of life are filled with humanity that both elevates and dissipates the spirit.” Her work has been written about in The NY Times, Art News, The Village Voice, The Star-Ledger, Newsday, Flash Art...
