Doug Forsythe is a well known Canadian / International contemporary artist/printmaker born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia 1949 where he grew up with a natural fascination for the sea.
He demonstrated a natural aptitude for painting and drawing at a very young age and began honing this ability at The Nova Scotia Collage of Art & Design in 1968. His career now spans five decades. He authored the definitive guide to building an etching press which is referenced by printmakers world wide. His press design can be found in printmaking studios in thirty countries around the globe.
Forsythe works in various mediums including intaglio printmaking, monotype, serigraphy, mixed media, watercolor, oil, acrylics, encaustic & digital paint. Forsythe's command of his chosen mediums has enabled him to satisfy his ultimate intention - to create rich and deeply convincing works of art . His innovative nature is perhaps best portrayed in his intaglio collagraph prints, for most of the techniques he uses to build his plates were of his own design.
He is an artist who relishes experimentation and evolution, though is not afraid to return to earlier discoveries, themes and styles. In 1995 Forsythe began exploring a new art medium "The Computer" and in 1997 received an international design award from Corel Corp. for his work.
In 2008 Forsythe's first monograph was published A Forty Year Retrospective 1968-2008
In 2021 Forsythe's second monograph was published A Fifty + Year Retrospective 1967-2021
Forsythe has exhibited his work throughout North America and has enjoyed numerous successful shows in Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, New York & Los Angeles . In 1987 his original prints were included in a tour of Embassies in Holland, France & Germany.

Frame: 19"H x 14"W Mat: 18.25"H x 13.25"W Image: 14.5"H x 9.5"W Tosa Mitsuoki was a Japanese painter, reinvigorating the Yamato style of classical Japanese painting. Yamato-e originated from interest in reproducing early Tang dynasty paintings, and was later reinvented and further refined to fit Japanese cultural perceptions in the late Heian period. Yamato, sometimes referred to as wa or kazu had become synonymous with the Tosa-ha by the Muromachi period as a way for Japanese artist to distinguish their works from those of mainland Chinese paintings, kara-e. Yamato-e incorporated various visual and literary techniques for establishing narrative. Works were not always accompanied with text and may rely on heavily on period specific visual motifs, icons, and symbols to relay a story or theme. Tosa style by the time of Mitsuoki focused heavily on depicting themes of plants and nature, famous places, meisho, the four seasons, shik, bird-and-flower, kacho. Many of these popular symbols and icons from mimicking Chinese practices, treating the original Chinese masterwork as a sort of prototype to improve upon. Popular formats for Mitsuoki's pictures were wall scrolls kakemono, or handscrolls that would be read from right to left with the accompanied story, sliding doors fusuma and folding screen panels byobu that featured up to six panels. Mitsuoki's style incorporated the depth and calligraphy techniques of ink wash brushwork similar to Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty Chinese court paintings...Category
