Emile A. Gruppé
New England Town Scene Oil Painting by listed artist Emile Gruppe (1896-1978)

About the Item

Emile Albert Gruppe was a very well known Cape Ann, Massachusetts painter who founded his own Gruppe Summer School in 1942. He was born in Rochester, NY in 1896 and studied at the Art Students League in New York, the National Academy of Design and in Paris. His scenes of Gloucester and Rockport are famous images in the American art scene. Gruppe exhibited extensively throughout the United States between 1913 and 1967. His works are held in many museums and in the White House. Both his father, Charles Paul Gruppe (1860-1940) and his son, Charles C. Gruppe, born 1928 are also very well known artists of the region. This oil on board, dating to ca. 1930’s depicts a town scene likely north of Boston, but certainly somewhere in New England. It has a great sense of color and light and shadow. It is framed in a period gold frame of delicate and unusual design, indicative of the great work of art that it is. The oil itself is signed lower right and measures 12” x 16”. Including the frame, the overall dimensions are 15 1/2” x 19 1/2”. It is in very good condition, with no issues to report and ready to display on your wall of choice.
