About the Item
Emilio Grau Sala (1911-1975) - Sunset in Deauville - Oil on canvas
Oil measures 60x73 cm.
Frame measures 73x86 cm.
Son of cartoonist Juan Grau Miró, he was born in Barcelona in 1911. Although he attended the School of Fine Arts, his training is considered largely self-taught. His first exhibition takes place in 1930, at the "Badriñas Gallery" in the same city.
At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936), Grau Sala left Spain with his wife, also a painter Ángeles Santos, and settled in Paris. There it will remain for 25 years.
In Paris, Grau Sala knows the avant-garde up close but clearly opts for a friendly and colorful figuration, derived from Impressionism and Fauvism. It was a path already taken up by the commercial circuit, surpassed in terms of novelty by cubism and surrealism, but which was kept alive at a high level thanks to masters such as Pierre Bonnard, Chagall and Raoul Dufy, whom Grau Sala followed. perhaps excessively dependent. This stylistic choice of the artist conditioned that of his wife, leading her towards the conventional landscape, which certified the end of Ángeles Santos as a singular surrealist creator, an influence that critics did not hesitate to lament.

Emilio Grau Sala
Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land.
He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it.
All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar Museum, Philadelphia Museum, Museum of Buenos Aires, etc. EXHIBITION

- Modernist Oil Painting Moody Fauvist Abstract Nude Figure Ralph Della VolpeLocated in Surfside, FLRALPH DELLA-VOLPE (1923-2017) Fine Art Painter, American Contemporary Oil on canvas Hand signed lower right Artist Signed, Abstract Oil on Canvas. Figure in the distance. Approx: 30" x 27 1/2" framed, 26 1/2" x 23 1/2" canvas. TRAINING: National Academy of Design The Art Students League, NYC Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe's semi-abstract paintings of often simplified, minimalist, beach scenes and anonymous portraits "convey profound awareness of mood and character", and his paintings are hardly as literal as they may first appear (Arts Magazine. "New York Exhibitions". 1965). His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country. He was included in the show Abstraction: 1950-1970 at Taylor Graham, Greenwich CT.
