Evelyn Campbell
Autumn at the Cottage in the Woods - Landscape in oil on Masonite

mid 20th Century

About the Item

Lush landscape of an autumn forest by Evelyn Campbell (Australian, 20th Century). A path runs from the lower right of the composition through an open gap in a wood fence, with a wagon wheel leaning against it. The surrounding trees are bright shades of yellow, orange, and green. It's likely that the house peeking through the foliage is the cottage that Evelyn and her husband Reg built for themselves. Signed "Evelyn Campbell" in the lower right corner Canvas laid down on masonite; no frame. Board size: 12"H x 18"W Evelyn Campbell (Australian, 20th Century) was an artist and the wife of Reg Campbell, also a notable artist. Evelyn was also well known for her garden landscaping, having won The Sydney Morning Herald’s Country Garden Award five times for her cottage garden. Red and Evelyn acquired their property on a mining lease after World War Two as a place of inspiration and seclusion, and built the home themselves. Exhibitions: 1977 - James Cook Art Gallery, Cronulla, Australia 1991 - Figure Drawings by teachers of Julian Ashton's Art School - Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Bathurst, NSW, Australia
