About the Item

A beautiful signed and dated 1940 impressionist oil on canvas depicting the city Chartres in northern France with it's famous cathedral, by Faith Ashford. The work has a wonderful provenance, having been exhibited at the Royal Academy and previously been part of the National Art Collection at the Council House, Chichester. Signed with initials and dated 1940 lower right and with it's original handwritten artist's label on the reverse. Presented in a wonderful art-deco style reverse profile frame. Artist: Faith Ashford (British, 1884-1967) Title: Chartres Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 18 x 20.5 inches (46 x 51 cm) including the frame Faith Ashford was a lecturer at the University of Reading’s School of Art, and a founder member of the Reading Guild of Artists. A poet and artist, Ashford mainly exhibited oil paintings. These were displayed at locations including the Royal Academy and the Wertheim Gallery. Her solo show at the Wertheim Gallery, which is best-known for supporting many well-known 20th century artists, indicates Ashford’s skill.

    Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888.
