About the Item
This large captivating and stunning oil painting is by noted Italian artist Francis Moltino. Painted in 1866 the painting is of a view of the Thames with Blackfriars Bridge and the city of London in the background. A glorious day is depicted with a slight summer haze, the green of the water giving way to the bright blue sky. This is one his very best works and a glorious vibrant gem of an oil painting. Signed and dated 1866, also signed and inscribed with title on papers affixed to the stretcher.
Provenance: Barrington Court, Somerset, Wren Room, until sold, c.1921; with London, The Parker Gallery (their label verso). Exhibited: probably London, The Royal Society of British Artists, 1866, no.542 as `View of old Blackfriars Bridge, looking East`
Condition. Oil on canvas, 49 inches by 29 inches unframed and in good condition.
Housed in a complementary frame, 56 inches by 36 inches framed and in good condition.
Francis Moltino (1818-1874) was an Italian painter, resident in London, who specialised in landscapes and coastal scenes. His work is similar to that of Turner in style, but with an air of southern Europe. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1848 and 1855. He was resident in Covent Garden and then Pimlico in London from the mid 1840s. In later life he returned to Italy and painted in Venice, where he might originally have come from.
