Framed in a period gold leaf frame 15.5 by 22.5 inches. Franklin Briscoe (1844 – 1903) Known for his rendering of seascapes, historical scenes, and portraits, Franklin Briscoe was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1844. At age four, his family moved to Philadelphia, where he became a student of the esteemed marine painter, Edward Moran. As a young adult, Briscoe traveled to Europe several times, where he studied the masterpieces of England, France, and other important art centers of the time. From many of these long ventures across the Atlantic Ocean, Briscoe found some of the seascape subjects featured in his paintings. In 1885, he executed the monumental historical mural, “The Battle of Gettysburg”, a dramatic depiction of the most significant battle of the American Civil War. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Art Association, and was included in the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.
