Frederick William Hulme
Fishermen in a Rocky River Landscape - British Victorian art oil painting

1878

About the Item

This charming Victorian landscape is by much exhibited British artist Frederick William Hulme. The painting is of two fishermen on large rocks by the edge of a river. They are stood under a tree with a landscape view in the background and a summer's sky above. The detail is such that you can even see their line and float. A lovely Victorian landscape dated to 1878 by a regular Royal Academy exhibitor. Signed and dated lower right. Provenance. Wiltshire estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 28 inches by 24 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a fine gilt frame, 36 inches by 32 inches framed. In good condition. Frederick William Hulme (1816 - 1884) F.W. Hulme was born on 22nd October, 1816 in Swinton, Yorkshire. He was initially taught by his mother, who was a painter on porcelain, and by 1841 he had exhibited his first landscapes at the Birmingham Academy. During the first three decades of the 19th century British landscape painting was transformed from a fairly humble branch of art, based on topography, to one that was rich and vitally creative. England was changing from a rural society to an urban one and country life was viewed nostalgically as purer, healthier and more natural than life in the smoky new cities. Social prestige was associated with ownership of land and money and trade were seen as vulgar. The Victorian new rich hastened to buy themselves country estates and the large demand for landscape paintings produced a huge number of landscape artists. These pictures filled the new middleclass parlours and were the staple diet of the Royal Academy every year. Hulme moved to London in 1844 where he became an illustrator and engraver. However, he soon tired of this and began painting landscapes again. By 1852 the artist was living in Hereford Square and he began exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and the British Institute. His paintings were mostly idyllic Welsh or Surrey views with animals, particularly sheep, and occasional rustic figures. His style is clear and fresh and his tranquil pastoral scenes fulfilled the Victorian ideal. By 1869 Hulme was living at 8 St. Alban's Road in Kensington from where he continued to exhibit at the Academy until 1884. Hulme lived in London until the end of his life. He died on 14th November, 1884.

  • The Young Art Critics - Scottish Edwardian art portrait landscape oil painting
    Located in London, GB
This lovely Edwardian exhibited portrait landscape oil painting is by noted Scottish artist James Riddel. It was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and again in Glasgow Institute in 1913, entitled The Critics. Painted circa 1909, the painting has the muted tones but varied palette of the Scottish School. The focus of the composition is a young boy and girl stood in the foreground, outdoors, examining a painting in progress on an easel. They look as if they are giving it very careful consideration. The artist's bag, brushes and tubes of paint lie on the grass beneath the easel but he is not in view. The painting is of the countryside and path leading to a collection of dwellings beyond, all bathed in sunshine. The earnestness of the young art critics can be seen in their body language and is very sweet. A really lovely exhibited Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting and an excellent example of Riddel's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1909 no. 294, entitled The Critics. Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts 1913 no. 420 entitled The Critics.
