George Oberteuffer
Landscape in Spring

1910

About the Item

George Oberteuffer was an American Impressionist but he spent much of his career painting in France which is where this may have been done. He embraced the Post - Impressionist style and did so fluidly and more adeptly than many Americans. As with this sun laden landscape, he applies thick strokes of impastic paint and in a quick manner which gives the piece movement and spontenaiety. His work is in American museums and he is historically noted! This piece has a very fine hand carved Art Nouveau frame of 22 karat gold and in person is vivid and alive! Inside the frame the canvas measures 25.75 x 32.

  • Boothbay Harbor, Maine from the Hill
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Best known for his painterly landscape views, Oberteuffer developed a fresh and vigorous style, using a subdued color palette with agile brushstrokes that was influenced by French Impressionism. Boothbay Harbor from the Hill is a wonderful example of this style of painting and shows Oberteuffer’s mastery of subtle color. It is an added plus that Oberteuffer has specifically referenced a clearly identifiable locale- Boothbay Harbor- in his title and additionally denoted that the view was painted from the hillside, potentially capturing actual homes and buildings of the time. Framed in a Gold Leaf Whistler style frame of exceptional quality. The painting has vivid and fresh color and creates a window in any room. The canvas inside the frame measures 30 x 24 inches. This Neo-Impressionist landscape by the French artist Achille Laugé captures an orchard in late spring in his celebrated, highly modern style. The work displays a thick impasto thanks to the artist's distinctive technique of applying his paint in quick dabs, a characteristic of his later works. One of the foremost painters of the Post-Impressionist period, Laugé’s works are beloved for his sensitivity to light, shade and tone, and his mastery of medium is clearly on display in Almond Trees...
