Giovan Battista Discepoli, called the Zoppo from Lugano [Castagnola (Lugano) 1590 - Lugano 1654] Coronation of Thorns Oil on panel, cm. 34.2x39.5 – with frame cm. 46x52 Shaped and ebonised wooden cassetta frame Expertise: Francesco Frangi Publications: Bozzetti, modelletti, sketches: dalla collezione di Giorgio Baratti (From the Giorgio Baratti Collection) curated by Anna Orlando, Agnese Marengo and Annalisa Scarpa, Genova, 2022, pp. 38-41. The precious panel painting presented here is a valuable testimony of the artistic activity of Giovan Battista Discepoli known as Lo Zoppo da Lugano. Assigned by critics to the production of the Luganese painter, our work can be compared with another very similar version kept in the Church of the Ascension in Cabbio. The scene depicted, the Coronation of Thorns, taken from the Passion of Jesus Christ, is rendered with a skilful creativity by the cursive drafting of the paint.
