Gregory Hennen
Old Pine March, May, Wyatt Mt., Forest Landscape, Brown Woods Botanical

2022

About the Item

Rich, warm earth-toned brown trees line the forest floor in March in this rich, highly detailed landscape. The many shades of brown are offset by shades of luminous verdant green and light beige, alluding to the peace of the forest and the complexity of nature's changing seasons. This square painting on 300 lb Arches paper is matted in off-white. Signed, dated and titled on recto and verso. 5 x 5 inches (unframed), 8 x 8 inches (matted). Although the artist names his paintings after places, his complex compositions are usually composites of several location sketches and visual memory, not exact reproductions of a specific place. A naturalist as well as a life-long painter, Hennen has a close relationship with his environment. On his daily walks he fills sketchbooks chronicling the land, the effect of passing light and the seasonal changes. From these many field sketches, a final sketch is used as a guide for rendering a drawing with graphite onto the 3/4 inch wood panel for a painting. By building up tens of thousands of small brush strokes, Hennen’s paintings are a complex collection of small marks gathered and made solid. The landscape paintings are at once astoundingly complex and perfectly calm. Hennen makes what can be described as ego-less paintings, perfectly crafted and stunningly beautiful; his paintings are a joy to experience.

  • 'August Wildflowers III' - naturalist landscape, colorful, botanical, layered
    By Carlyle Wolfe Lee
    Located in Atlanta, GA
"August Wildflowers II" is a colorful naturalist landscape featuring hues of purple, pink, orange, blue and green. This work is framed in a simple white frame behind Museum Glass measuring 60 by 41 inches. Carlyle is inspired by the works of Claude Monet, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Walter Inglis Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Calder and Mary Delany. This piece is part of a collaborative series by Carlyle and her husband Thad Lee. This body of work was made in tandem, through painting and photography, that explores their mutual delight in the natural world and within their own marriage. Carlyle Wolfe’s paintings & works on paper are about an awareness of the natural world—becoming progressively, cyclically more present to its rhythms, gaining deeper understanding of its design, & acquiring direct experiential knowledge of its mysterious beauty. For the last 15 years, Wolfe has been making contour line drawings of plants form observation. From her drawings, she isolates silhouettes into paper stencils which she uses to create oil paintings & works on paper – or cut out of metal to make sculptures. Her work is cumulative in nature – gradually marking time & seasonal change, unity & variety, individual & collective beauty. Wolfe grew up in Canton, Mississippi, & earned a BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi & an MFA in painting & drawing from Louisiana State University. She has also studied in Cortona, Italy, & at the University of Georgia. Wolfe has exhibited work throughout the South, including Spalding Nix...
