Gregory Sumida
Pail, Boulders, Stream -American Realism

1972

About the Item

This evocative watercolor painting is a landscape, but also a still life in the sense that the viewer is gazing at a scene, but also at the objects within the scene. There is a meditative stillness in this wonderful composition. The watercolor is by the American Realist master Gregory Sumida (1948-), a California artist in the tradition of Andrew Wyeth and other great American Realist artists who have mastered the medium to create strongly evocative works of art. The painting measures 21.5 inches x 29.5 inches (31 inches x 38.5 inches framed). It is signed and dated in the lower left, “G.Sumida ‘72”. The painting is framed with a very nice dark wood frame and cream colored mat that complement the painting nicely. The painting, mat and the frame are in good condition. Born and raised in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles to Japanese parents, George and Alice Sumida, Gregory Sumida is a painter of "Old World dedication". His styles vary from impressionism to realism to western to Japanese influence, and he is dedicated to continually changing and growing. Sumida is self taught and began selling paintings at age 15. His life-changing inspiration came from a high school trip to the Los Angeles Art Museum and from a conversation about Andrew Wyeth with actor Charlton Heston. Sumida expressed great admiration for Wyeth, and Heston suggested he write to him. Amazed at getting a response, Sumida not only received a cordial note but a critique of a painting he had sent. Wyeth also advised him: "Don't take lessons." He is also a photographer, writer, musician and philosopher. Reference: askart.
