Johanna / Hanni Bay was a Swiss feminist artiste; a strong woman, single mother to three children, who compromised rarely when it came to her art. She studied in Paris, as well as under the famous Cuno Amiet, but didn't really exhibit often. Many portraits of her were painted to make ends meet. However she really shone especially, when painting outdoors ‘plein air’ in nature, creating her alpine landscapes.
In those days the Swiss alps were a male domain, which she - in spite of being unwelcome in the various high altitude SAS mountain chalets - 'successfully', together with other female artists such as her friend Marcella Grundig, infiltrated, to rub shoulders with the male alpine landscapers of the day.
Today her work is held in all important museums in Switzerland and has been shown in posthumous exhibitions.
This plein air painting on offer, depicting the indigenous pine trees of the region known as Arven trees, was probably created the 30's, whilst she lived in the Grisons of Switzerland.
The frame has been added later by the previous owner.
