About the Item
A fine impressionist oil painting with boats at sunset by Australian American artist Hayley Lever (1876-1958). Lever was born in Adelaide, Australia and studied first at the Adelaide’s Prince Alfred College and later attended James Ashton’s Academy of Art. He then traveled and studied in England, settling in St. Ives, painting views of Cornwall and eventually exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Lever moved to New York around 1910-11, painting scenes of the city and surroundings, and summering in Gloucester, Mass, where he painted and taught sketching and painting classes at his summer studio. He became well known for his post-impressionist marine and landscape paintings. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed under glass in a decorative molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 10.5 in H x 13.25 in W, actual; 20.75 in H x 23.75 in W x 1.75 in D, framed.

He often visited the studio of his grandfather, the famous artist Victor Chulovich, and watched the creation of paintings. As you may imagine, this has inspired him to start painting. Viktor’s first steps in art were directed by his grandfather and his parents, artists Nickolay Butko and Marina Chulovich, he then studied at the Moscow Art School, which is known for a high level of training. After completing his training at the art school, Butko painted at the Academic Dacha of Artists, created by the great Russian artist Ilya Repin for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. There he worked under the guidance of famous artists Alexey Gritsay and Tkachev brothers, which had a big impact on his creativity. Viktor’s first solo show was held in the United States, in 2002 at the McCarthey Gallery, one of the foremost dealers in the United States for Russian Impressionist art. This marked the beginning of a long cooperation with the gallery.
