About the Item
"Ucross Square III" is an original oil painting on masonite board signed by the artist in the lower right. It depicts three black cows against a yellow rolling field landscape. Foster's bright colors and textured brushstrokes give this painting a tactile and sunny feeling.
24 1/4" x 24 1/4" art
Painter, Heather Foster, has captured specific moments in her various series including landscapes, cityscapes, chess players and now, cattle. This current series, which she has been working with for several years, Foster depicts the relationships of the animals to one another and their surroundings, as well as to the viewer, in an amusing and charming way. She lures the audience into her world initially with the clever composition and then shows the viewer the painting's multifaceted levels. She does this by enabling the viewer to see the process that has brought her art to what the eye presently sees. The layers, a visible adding and scraping away, allow the process to become the composition.
Heather Foster received her BFA in General Fine Arts in May of 1990, from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore, Maryland. While there, she was the recipient of various merit scholarships. Her work has been exhibited in Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, New York and is currently available in Basalt, Colorado; Brooklyn, New York; and the David Barnett Gallery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

- 'Blue Landscape' Original Signed PaintingBy Antonio JosephLocated in Milwaukee, WI'Blue Landscape' is an original painting by the master of Haitian art Antonio Joseph. In the painting, Joseph works with magic realist themes: The landscape is a deep and saturated blue, with greens and yellows covering the Haitian mountains as they emerge out of the sea. The mountains are likewise dotted with the colorful houses so emblematic of Haitian vernacular architecture. The viewer looks out toward at these features while seemly contained within a set of sea walls. In the immediate foreground, pushed up against the picture plane, a mysterious vine grows out of the hard industrial ground, with nearly a dozen different flowers bursting from the same vine. The impossibility of these flowers perhaps relates the artist's work to the strong Latin American surrealist artists, like Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo, while also referencing Haitian folk culture and spirituality. caesin on masonite 23.88 x 36 inches, artwork 26.38 x 38.25 inches, frame signed "Antonio Joseph" lower right and dated 53 inscribed "172" in green ink, on reverse, center inscribed "380- 91-150" in white chalk, on reverse, center left inscribed "13" in graphite, on reverse, center right Overall good condition; some dust accumulation to surface; tidemarks on reverse; some scratches and surface losses to vintage frame. Presented in a mid-century modern profile wood moulding with gold leaf bevel and 1-inch linen liner. Antonio Joseph was born on April 15, 1921 in Barahona, Dominican Republic to Haitian parents. In his youth he was trained as a tailor and also attended Varones' "La Escuela Graduata" and studied at the Santa Cecilia Music Academy. When he was seventeen, at the time of the "perejil" massacre where thousands of Haitians were murdered, he was smuggled out of the Dominican Republic with his mother, brother and sister. When he arrived in Haiti, he first lived thanks to the practice of tailoring. In 1944, he was the first student and member registered at the Art Centre upon the official opening of the institution. There he studied geometric design and watercolor with DeWitt Peters, who recognized his potential as the Centre's first "discovery" and an asset to the nascent institution. He also practiced sculpture with Jason Seley, ceramics with Edith Wegard, and silkscreen printing with Franck Jacobson. He learned the first notions of composition and perspective with the French sculptor Pierre Bourdelle, who came to Haiti to oversee the creation of the murals of the Cité de l'Exposition in Port-au-Prince. From 1945 to 1949, he worked with Bourdelle on the enormous state-funded project, conceived as part of the festivities commemorating the bicentenary of the founding of the city of Port-au-Prince. In 1952, Paul Keene, an artist from Philadelphia taught and exhibited at the Art Center. While there, he passed on to Antonio Joseph the techniques of casein painting, which combine the virtuosity of oil painting with the possibilities of watercolor. This discovery was instrumental in Antonio Joseph’s career, and he then entered an intense production phase. He at that time produced a series of paintings for which, in 1953, the Guggenheim Foundation awarded him a prestigious research and development grant. He was the first Haitian artist to receive this scholarship in the field of "creative painting...Category

- Winter Walk with Jasper, (Black Cat painting)By Sterling Boyd StrauserLocated in Wilton Manors, FLSterling Strauser (1907-1995). Dorothy and Jasper, Crystal Street Station, 1970. Oil on masonite panel, 11.5 x 22.25 inches. Signed and dated lower right. Very good condition with no damage or conservation. Unframed. Framing services available. Image depicts the artist's wife, Dorothy Strauser, walking the beloved family cat, Jasper. In the background can be seen the East Stroudsburg Pa Train Depot on Crystal Street. Provenance: Estate of the artist's Granddaughter, Princeton NJ. Often called a romantic expressionist and American intimist, self-taught Pennsylvania artist Sterling Strauser (1907-1995) completed his first oil painting in 1922- inspired by frequent visits to the collection of American folk art at the Everhardt Museum in Scranton. Throughout the following seven decades of his career, Strauser’s artistic pursuit was based on his own intuition and determination to paint what he saw, rather than adhering to the conventional pictorial structures prescribed by prevailing styles at the time. Strauser rejected pretension, believing instead that art should work from life as it was lived. His oeuvre therefore serves as an extremely personal record of his observations and experiences from his lifetime painting in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Beginning early in his career, Strauser took his inspiration from American regionalists and traditional realists in the Ashcan style, as well as European movements such as Fauvism and Cubism, yet he eventually developed his own fluid realism based on subject matter beloved and familiar to him- family and friends, local landscapes and floral still lifes. Known for his distorted pictorial space, exaggerated with vivid color, heavy impasto and an intensity of emotion, Strauser was adept at altering and rearranging the details and aspects of any given form to create a new kind of beauty. "All a painting has to do, or a piece of sculpture, or whatever, is to entertain the critical eye. You have to have a fresh seeing eye… to look at things like a child, as if looking at the world for the first time (seeing) something that somebody else doesn’t see, something you want to identify with… Painting is largely a matter of evaluation. (It) doesn’t matter how much it looks like the subject matter. It just depends on how interesting you have made it so that it pleases the critical eye." STERLING STRAUSER, STERLING STRAUSER: A MODERNIST REVISTED, P. 23 Sterling exhibited his work extensively throughout the country and drew the attention of many notable fellow artists including Milton Avery, Louise Nevelson, David Burliuk, Chaim Gross and Red Grooms. Sterling was also extremely influential within the arts community of Pennsylvania through his discovery and promotion of self-taught American Folk artists such as Justin McCarthy, Jack Savitsky, Joseph Gatto...Category
