About the Item
'The Pack' by Heywood Hardy. A Group of English Setter Dogs in a green remote British landscape, game bird sporting scene. Late Victorian period painting which would look beautiful in any country house interior. Beautiful detail in background and meticulous detail in the foreground.
Heywood Hardy was born into a family of painters. At the age of 17, he began his career painting animals and succeeded in supporting himself solely from his paintings. He moved to Paris in 1864 to study with Pielse, a battle painter, while attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He returned to London in 1870 where he found his paintings in high demand. His career flourished as he began working commissions for prominent figures in society to create portraits as well as equestrian and sporting paintings. Hardy also worked as an illustrator for The Illustrated London News and The Graphic Magazine. His early paintings largely consisted of landscapes, but he became famous later for his hunting and sporting genre.

Heywood Hardy
Heywood Hardy was born in Chichester, Sussex, the youngest of 10 children of the artist James Hardy senior (1801–1879) and his wife Elizabeth. His first two paintings, landscapes, were accepted for exhibition at The Royal Academy in 1864. In the same year he was appointed an Ensign in the 7th Somersetshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, a part-time position. Later that year he left Keynsham to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where his principal teacher was Isidore Pils. Hardy spent much of his spare time copying paintings in the Louvre. Hardy visited Egypt in 1873 to paint wildlife. In London he studied the comparative anatomy of animals and birds with Professor Alfred Henry Garrod. Heywood Hardy was a founder member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, a founder member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society.
