Hugo Matzenauer
"Budapest Street Scene" 20th Cen. Hungarian Impressionist Oil Painting on Canvas

Mid-20th Century

About the Item

A beautiful oil on canvas painting by Hungarian artist, Hugo Matzenauer. Matzenauer was a painter known for his colorful cityscapes depicting the times of his generation. His work is comparable to those of Jules Herve, Antoine Blanchard, and Edouard Cortes. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see busy street filled with movement in the center of Budapest. The street is filled with life on a crisp Fall day with people walking alongside the bustling cars and trolleys of the city. People are depicted throughout the streets and the lights from the cafes and stores flicker and reflect on the wet ground, illuminating the scene in a magical way. The details are magnificent as Matzenauer captures the architecture of Budapest so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. This painting is signed lower left and it comes housed in an original wood frame with linen liner ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso. Art measures 13 x 18 inches Frame measures 18.5 x 23.5 inches PROVENANCE: Estate of a Private collection Chicago, IL; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. Meanwhile, the effervecent and lively life of the cafes that surround it vibrate strongly with its bright lights.
