"Mono Hot Springs Cabins, Fresno Co - Calif" Forest Landscape in Oil on Board Serene depiction of two cabins in the Sierra Mountains by HW Dittmann (Dittman) (American, Born-1883 circa). A wooden cabin with a green roof is nestled among trees and boulders. A second cabin can be seen at the far edge of the right side of the composition. H.W. Dittmann was born in Michegan and resided in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century. He was the proprietor of an Art goods company "Dittman's, also called Dittmann & Company at 2301-2308 Clement Street with his brother Frank Bert Dittmann a photographer and Seaman. Signed "HW Dittmann" in the lower right corner. Titled "Mono Hot Springs Cabins, Fresno Co - Calif" on verso. Stamp from "Dittmann's 161 West Portal Ave San Francisco 27. Calif" on verso. Presented in a wormwood frame. Frame size: 15.25"H x 19"W Board size: 12"H x 16"W

Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris. Afterwards, she established a studio on the Rue De Bagneaux in France with several other American women artists...
