Jacques Martin Ferrieres
“Reflections", French landscape, post-impressionist river detail, oil on canvas

Circa 1930

About the Item

This is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Jacques Martin-Ferrières painted mostly still lifes and landscape scenes, often travelling to a variety of places and painting everywhere he went. He would paint subjects of landscapes and nature in Southern regions of France, standing out for his vivid use of colour and his skill. Martin-Ferrières became known for his techniques, applying layers of paint to the canvas in free brushstrokes, to create balanced compositions of animation and light. This can be seen in this painting, where he reflects light off the water of the river, with subtle harmonies of ochre and green tones. The artist was born in 1893 in S.E. France, to Henri Martin, a famous pointillist. He receivedhis first major honour in 1923 in the Paris Salon after his painting, "Le Christ" was awarded a Siver Medal and then purchased by the French State. He went on to exhibit at the Salon regularly for many years.

This Neo-Impressionist landscape by the French artist Achille Laugé captures an orchard in late spring in his celebrated, highly modern style. The work displays a thick impasto thanks to the artist's distinctive technique of applying his paint in quick dabs, a characteristic of his later works. One of the foremost painters of the Post-Impressionist period, Laugé’s works are beloved for his sensitivity to light, shade and tone, and his mastery of medium is clearly on display in Almond Trees...
