About the Item

A colorful impressionist winter landscape with a covered bridge and oxen pulling logs by American artist James King Bonnar (1883/85- 1961). Bonnar was born in North Adams, MA and lived in Newtonville, MA. Bonnar graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art where his teachers included Joseph DeCamp, and Ernest Major. He was the president of the Copley Society of Boston and the Business Men's Art Club of Boston and was a member of the Rockport and North Shore Art Associations. and was a member of the Rockport School of artists along with Emile Gruppe, Aldro Hibbard and Anthony Thieme. He became well known for his Vermont and New Hampshire landscapes, harbor views, and murals. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in a decorative giltwood frame. Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and later worked in Provincetown and Rockport, Massachusetts, with a home in St. Augustine. A founder of the Provincetown Art Association and one of the original Provincetown Printers, Lindenmuth was a semi-abstract painter and graphic artist who did much to promote modernist styles and was well known for his modernist, semi-abstract and marine subject paintings. Lindenmuth studied with Robert Henri and was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Rockport Art Association.
