Artist Statement
“In a vast horizontal
stretch of land
open to sky
rolling over
endlessly,
evening comes,
& clouds separate,
revealing last sun--
Oh, suddenly
golden tops
on all things
earthly!
Quick--
no time to think
nor contemplate,
just paint, respond!
succumbing to
this brief burst
of beauty,
stilling it
forever.”
~ Jean LeGassick

Jean LeGassick
Jean LeGassick was born in California in 1950 and lived there for her first 47 years. She graduated from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, in 1979 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. LeGassick paints in plein air because “nature is the greatest teacher.” She prefers to travel by truck camper, so she can camp at the source of her inspiration. She often uses mule pack train sand hikes with art supplies carried on her back to remote campsites, immersing herself in the natural world. Her favorite places to paint are the rugged mountains, deserts, and seashores of the West.
As a longtime art instructor, LeGassick continues to occasionally teach oil painting workshops. LeGassick was recently honored by being chosen as one of six artists filmed for the PBS series, “Plein-Air: Painting the American Landscape” shown on public television stations across the nation. Jean LeGassick resides in Cedarville, a tiny town in the rural north-east corner of California.
