Jeremy Mann
"Composition #59" Oil Painting

2009

About the Item

Jeremy Mann's "Composition #59" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a dark city setting filled with fog and passerby. About the artist: Jeremy Mann (b. 1979) is an American artist living and working in San Francisco, California. He graduated Cum Laude from Ohio University in 2002 where he received his BFA and in 2008 he received his MFA from the Academy of Art University in California. He is exhibited and represented both nationally and internationally. His paintings have been featured in a wide variety of publications including American Art Collector, and a documentary has been made about the artist and his work, entitled “A Solitary Mann” by Loic Zimmerman. Dominated by the female form, the figurative works of Jeremy Mann span generations all while remaining distinct in style. The muted palate of each piece paired with traditional elements reminiscent of the old masters separates Mann’s work from many other artists working today. The models both blend in and stand out from their respective backgrounds, drawing the viewer in. There is a sense that each of these scenes look in on private contemplation or a moment of reprieve. In his cityscapes, Mann balances realism with abstraction in such a way as to create an illusion of reflectivity, setting the viewer into the scene as if from behind a window. His work operates in a similar, temporal vein to his figurative pieces, though these paintings captures a different set of sights. Living in cities can be unremarkable at times and Mann seeks out these familiar settings to focus in on their uniqueness, highlighting the subtle and beautiful qualities we so often take for granted. The vitality and energy of a city is marked by the movement and changes of its inhabitants and Mann, in full recognition of this, composes his paintings in such a way as to make that apparent. Mann’s works in both subjects display his unique aesthetic and demonstrate why his paintings stand out amongst much of the work we see today. They are moody and dream-like, portrayed in a style that is recognizably all his own. There is no doubt that when looking back into the canon of art history that Jeremy Mann will be remembered for his immense contribution to the genre of painting and Gallery 1261 is honored to exhibit him.
