About the Item

Jesse F. Santos "Harvesting Rice" Philippine Landscape Oil Painting c.1970 Original oil on canvas Dimensions 30" wide x 24" high Signed and dated lower right Very good vintage condition Comes unframed Jesse F. Santos was born on June 24, 1928 in Teresa Rizal, Philippines. He began drawing at the age of 10 and became a Professional Artist at age 14. During WWII he did portraits of American GI'S and worked for Comics in the Philippines for 2 decades. He and his family moved to the United States in 1969. He was well known in the United States for his portraits of top American political figures and motion picture celebrities and for his Comic Illustrations. This fine painting is dated 1970, immediately after his arrival in the United States, and most likely elicited fond memories of the country he left behind as he was painting it. Bright, bold, colorful and full of life and texture. A rare opportunity!

Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
