About the Item

Wonderful mid century California landscape of Gold Rush's Amador City with iconic stone building and farm by John Britton Matthew (American, 1896 - 1980), circa 1960. Amador City is now popular tourist destination because of its rich history and its award winning vineyards and wineries. Signed lower right and on verso. Condition: good; presented in rustic wood frame with aged linen fillet. Image size: 13"H x 16"W. Framed size: 17"H x 21"W x 2"D. John Britton Matthew was born in Berkeley, CA on Sept. 16, 1896. Matthew studied at the AIC, UC Berkeley, with Hans Hofmann, Leon Kroll, and Henry McFee. He taught at Sacramento College (1926-60) and served on the board of directors at the Crocker Art Gallery for 22 years. He died in Sacramento on Oct. 7, 1980. Exh: Kingsley Art Club (Sacramento), 1933-52.

    Frame is rustic and recommend linen liner fillet be replaced. Vintage frame may show signs of wear consistent with age and history. Minor cosmetic issues will be minimized but may not be restored to original condition. New hanging hard-ware installed.
