About the Item

This painting is in excellent condition, new gallery arrival. Jorge Segrelles is a Spanish artists born in Alicante in 1960, but moved to Barcelona when he was six years old. From an early age he was drawn to painting and later studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. At this school he was able to develop his art techniques, concentrating on oil painting. Segrelles is represented by several prestigious art galleries in Spain that were drawn to his paintings of the coastal regions of the Spanish Levante. He has had numerous Spanish exhibitions throughout his professional career. The light of his works reminds us of the beauty of the land surrounding the Mediterranean sea. Through color and texture, Segrelles aims to leave a lasting impression on the viewer’s mind. His great experience and passion for painting is transmitted in all of his works making us feel, through his soft palette, the quality and atmosphere of his marine landscapes, which he masterfully captures.

    Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888.
