Joseph Frey
Joseph Frey was born in Walla Walla, Washington, D.C., on October 17, 1892. At age 16, Frey began his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He opened his first studio in 1915 in San Francisco, during the furor of the Panama Pacific International Exposition and painted many harbor scenes in and around the bay. After serving in World War I, he sailed out of San Francisco and spent many years at sea working as a chef and studying painting in various ports. By 1928, he had settled in Southern California, where he lived and worked as a chef in Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.

- Monterey Bay Dock Plein Air SeascapeLocated in Soquel, CASerene slice of Monterey Bay by Wyoming and California artist Katherine Jean Wipfler (American, B-1955). Thick, confident brushstrokes create a shimmering reflections in the water, contrasted by the pier's strong vertical stance. In some areas, the bright orange under-paint peeks through the upper layers, adding an extra sense of depth and vibrancy. Gilded frame with linen liner is included. Signed in the lower left corner. Inscription on verso states: "Monterey" Painted on location by K. Wipfler. 4-14-87 Image size: 10"H x 8"W. A full-time painter since 1979, she depicts wildlife and figures in landscape and works primarily in oil and outdoors "en plein air" on locations. She was born and raised in central California and attended nearby Columbia Junior College. Her first career was as a surgical technician, and she said that the experience she had with anatomy later helped with her art career. Following this, she decided to become an artist and moved to Idaho Falls and then to Jackson, Wyoming where she began plein air painting in 1980.
