About the Item
Autumnal River Scene by Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936), is a fine original oil painting on canvas. The artist is from Glasgow, and remained in Scotland painting the scenery of rivers, mountains and seascapes. Member of the Royal Scottish Academy, Henderson trained in the Glasgow School of Art, and his work was exhibited over many years in the region and the UK. HIs life and work transcends the Victorian 19th century period with the influences of the late 19th and 20th centuries moving from landscape realism to use of color and light. This seasonal favorite is in a likely original gilt frame with fine details.
First presented under glass the painting was returned to its original color and imported to the USA by Saltire Gallerie. Removal of the glass and cleaning gives viewers a more direct experience of color and texture of the paint.
Including the frame the size is about 26" by 32". No restoration was required. The frame condition is good, consistent with age, and the painting itself is in excellent condition. Ready to install on your wall.

Joseph Morris Henderson
Joseph Morris Henderson was born in Glasgow in the year 1863. He was the son of artist Joseph Henderson, by whom he was strongly influenced. He studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. Henderson exhibited throughout his life, primarily in Scotland. He was elected as an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and received a full membership in 1935.
