Joseph Rapp’s craftsmanship is apparent in the sense of stability that reinforces his vistas. He expresses the expansive moodiness of Columbia County’s scenery in terms of weather, natural light, and seasonality. This landscape painting depicts a Hudson Valley meadow in the early summer. Coniferous trees stand atop a grassy hill, behind which richly painted clouds fill the sky. While representational, Rapp's mark-making retains a geometric quality; this, paired with a vibrant color palette, makes for a subtly unique landscape image.
A statement from the artist:
I have lived most of my adult life in the Hudson Valley and rural areas of upstate New York. The landscape and the distinct seasons here have captured my imagination and have inspired me in so many ways. What I see feels meditative, magical, peaceful and sometimes brutal. It always feels like going home. I have attempted to capture that feeling in these paintings and I hope that you, the viewer, may see and feel some of those things as well.
