Karl Rudolph Krafft
American Impressionist Artist Karl Rudolph Krafft oil painting Winter Scene

circa 1900

About the Item

Winter Scene oil/canvas 20 x 24 image size, 23.75 x 27.50 framed Here is a very nice winter snow scene oil painting on canvas by Midwest American Artist Karl Rudolph Krafft. Original frame shows wear from age with missing gold in spots around the frame. The frame is presentable but could be redone or touched up if desired. The painting has been conserved, cleaned with some retouch as needed and shows fresh bright colors now as seen in the pics. The painting is signed lower right and has a backing to protect the canvas. There is a very subtle dent middle left side that is hardly noticeable. The painting measures 20 x 24 unframed. Prior auction records show prices up to $85,000.00. Biography from Jim's of Lambertville Born in Ohio in 1884, noted Illinois landscape artist, Carl Krafft, received his training at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Fine Arts Academy. He also took private lessons with Leon Kroll and Eugene Savage. Krafft was the founder and first president of the Art League of Oak Park, Illinois, and the Society of Ozark Painters. He was known for his freely crafted impressionist landscapes. His ability to portray the climate and mood of his subjects with an expertly controlled palette reflect the technical soundness of this artist. He often painted crisp winter landscapes using a thick impasto, sometimes incorporating a horse-drawn sleigh and rural farm buildings into his compositions. Although many of his snow paintings resemble the Pennsylvania landscape and have a similar feel to those of his contemporary, Edward Redfield, most were painted in the Midwest where he resided. Krafft did, in fact, visit New Hope in 1923, and possibly on other occasions. In a handwritten letter by Krafft, describing his painting, "Canal in Winter," he states, "This was painted in 1923, while visiting New Hope, Pennsylvania, a small town thirty miles north of Philadelphia. New Hope is an artist colony, home to Redfield, Garber and Spencer." A selection of exhibitions in which he participated, include the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Gallery Biennials and the Allied American Artists, among others. His paintings are in the permanent collections of more than two dozen museums and institutions nationwide. ARTIST/SELLERS STATEMENT I have been in the art business as an artist and dealer since the early 80's. Almost 40 years now. I primarily concentrate on my own art. My art is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.
