Karnec Jean Etienne
French Impressionist View of Boats in a Port, 'The Seine at Rouen'. Oil on Wood.

1900

About the Item

Late 19th century Impressionist oil, view of boats in a port, possibly Rouen, by Jean Etienne Karnec. Signed bottom left. Painted on fine chamfered hardwood panel with a trade stamp for Morin and Janet who supplied the panel. Artist's notation to the back of the panel. The painting is presented in a hand-carved gilt period frame. Karnec has beautifully captured the architecture of buildings surrounding and the boats in the port all under a colourful impressionist sky, probably at sunset. His brushstrokes impart a vivacity to the scene full of colour and interest but with his characteristic Impressionist style. A very charming and successful painting. The port of Rouen was a subject captured by many of the great Impressionist painters including Monet, Pissarro, Lebourg and even Gauguin. Jean Etienne Karnec was born in Austria in 1865. Having completed his studies he moved to Rouen in France and from there he travelled and painted widely in France, Italy and the Orient. He became well known for his city and marine views and waterscapes capturing the romanticism of time and place. His technique is Impressionist but with a use of thick impasto technique in parts, such as on this painting.
