Katharyn Gwendoln Truesdell
Vintage Southern California Abstract Landscape Painting - Katharyn Truesdell 70s

1970-1979

About the Item

Katharyn Gwendoln Truesdell - (American; 1909-1996) This colorful painting depicts a Southern California valley, likely near Sun City, over the mountains from Los Angeles and San Diego. It is oil on canvas and measures 24" x 30" and with its original period frame, 27" x 33". It is an energetic work as the colorful fields are shown from above and in perspective. It is a clear day with a blue sky and puffy passing white clouds. Artist Katherine Truesdell composed the painting using borders between the fields and highlighted several stands of trees with thicker impasto. The overall affect is very convincing and appealing as an image and dating to the 1970's. The frame is dark walnut with an architectural shape that relates to the geometry expressed in the painting. A linen liner was included with the frame to broaden the overall visual. The painting is signed lower right, as shown. A paper label with title and further artist information is affixed to the back. Please ignore the strong shadow line along the top, as depicted in the first image. Katharyn Gwendoln (Overman) Truesdell was born in 1909 in San Antonio, Texas. She moved to Los Angeles in 1940, pursued an art career and married William Truesdell. They continued to live in LA where she exhibited her works. In 1964, the couple relocated to the new community of Sun City, over the mountains from the coast. She remained there for 32 years until 1995, a year before her death. Truesdell was a member of the DAR, Colonial Dames, and the Women Painters of the West. This painting is of substantial size and presence that it could command a room or fit prominently in a collection of regional or mid century modern art. It's a rare scene of a verdant valley by an accomplished listed Southern California artist.
