Linda Hefner

About the Item

Linda Hefner is known for her vibrant acrylic paintings of historical New England barns and architecture. Hefner’s love of endangered Americana is rooted in the past, including her own: she spent formative years of her childhood among enduring one-room schoolhouses and pre-Civil War barns near her father’s mink farm in rural Maine. And though her illustrations have been published in The New Yorker and Harper’s Bazaar, Hefner’s clear-eyed paintings (painstakingly drafted on fine, prepared birch boards sanded to an eggshell finish) seem a rebuke to the blur of contemporary life. Hefner is fascinated by the untold stories and bygone integrity of her subjects. “It’s when they were made, and why they were made,” she has said. “They were made before electricity, before antibiotics even - these people needed these places in order to survive as communities. They’re beautiful and can’t be forgotten.” Each building she paints involves multiple site visits and long hours of care devoted to preserving its mute and elusive personality in the perfect light.

  • Bachelor Trek
    By Nancy Merkle
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
This painting was inspired by the landscape of Central Oregon near Mount Bachelor. The mountain stands proud against the rocky foothills that surround it.

    About the Artist
Nancy Merkle;s process begins with a glimpse of color, a flicker of light, a pattern, or a texture. Elements swirl in her mind for hours, sometimes days, sometimes weeks before a design clicks and is transferred to canvas. With the canvas in front of her, she works intuitively -- a mark here, a mark there, a little touch of color, a bit of texture -- until she is satisfied and declares the work finished. Currently Nancy;s work leans toward abstraction; she doesn't paint the world as it is, but as she wishes it were. Bold colors and loose brush strokes are her goal. When she;s not making art, Nancy travels the Pacific Coast with a bicycle strapped to the car and curiosity in my back pocket. Fun Fact: Nancy lived in Alaska until she was five. She had bison in the backyard, bears at the landfill, and a moose who stopped by once in a while to look for sweet grass...
