Linda Holt
"Koi Underwater Landscape" Bright fish swimming, blues, greens, pink, orange red

2021

About the Item

This work is a complex composition of 3 koi fish swimming, virtually an underwater landscape filled with light and brilliant color painted in a lush and fluid style bordering on abstraction. Fish are in shades of red, yellow and creamy white. The water is a rich combination of blues, dark greens, and aqua. An extraordinary colorist with an exuberant and gestural style, these paintings sparkle, and Holt's expressive style is ideally suited to the flickering light, color and movement one associates with koi and tropical underwater views. Additional works in the series are available in several sizes: 12 x 12 inches, 24 x 24 inches. and 30 x 40 inches. This painting is self-framed with light wood sides which can be left as is, painted over, or re-framed. Linda Holt has been painting koi fish underwater since the 1990s and more recently small and large-scale abstractions as well. With her love of paint and process, the abstractions are a logical evolution of Holt's more figurative work, and the 8" x 8" and 30" x 30" abstract paintings are sold individually but are also considered studies for larger abstractions that can be commissioned in any size. Nationally recognized for many years as one of the foremost painters of koi, Holt's style evolved to the point where pure paint and gesture assumed equal interest, and this parallel involvement with abstraction has resulted in numerous exhibitions which feature both aspects of her work. Linda Holt "5 Koi 21/2" Oil on Masonite Panel with Light Wood Sides 12 x 12 Inches Linda Holt was raised in Philadelphia and lived in England, Alabama and Virginia before attending the Paris American High School and graduating from Skidmore College with a BS in fine art in 1970. She received an MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Neil Welliver. Holt’s paintings have been seen in 19 one-person exhibitions, over 50 group exhibitions, and in addition to numerous private collections, works are included in many public collections including the Wichita Center for the Arts, Wellington Management, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Fidelity Investments, Mass General Hospital, and the Seaport and Reef Hotels. Selected reviews include articles in “The Boston Globe,” “Art New England,” and the “Houston Chronicle.” Holt was awarded the Nathaniel Saltonstall Purchase Prize in Drawing, has been a Trustee and Visiting Artist at Montserrat College, a Guest Critic at FIT in New York, and a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. The artist resides in Boston and has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 1995.

He participated in Parisian Salons from his youth and was not yet twenty when the Katia Granoff 6 gallery , then the Cardo 7 gallery , organized his first personal exhibitions. “The winner is under thirty years old” observes Claude Roger-Marx , who does not fail to note “the atmosphere of disguise which is dear to him” as well as “the muted truculence which he gives to the opaque backgrounds where sing with distinction cold grays, greens, carmines and saffron” 8 when in 1951 the prize from the Society of Collectors and Art Lovers was awarded to Gabriel Dauchot. Waldemar George observed in the 1950s that if "his early works were treated in a realistic style which sometimes borders on populism, the painter tries to free himself from it and reacts against a literary art...
