About the Item
A substantial oil landscape showing a view of a sunlit courtyard with a fountain and blossoming perennials in earthenware pots, and a view beyond towards a neo-classical villa.
Signed lower right, "Loraine Balsillie" (American, 1919-2016) and painted circa 1980.
Loraine Balsillie first studied painting with Leo Fairbanks and went on to study under a number of northwest painters. Extended travel in Australia subsequently brightened her palette. Over a long career, Balsillie enjoyed commercial success and her work is held in public and private collections across the United States. She exhibited widely throughout the northwest and in Hawaii, and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. We are pleased to offer a large and luminous garden scene by this notable, American Impressionist.

Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell.
