About the Item
Inscribed lower right, 'SantoStefano' for Maria SantoStefano (American, 20th century); additionally signed, verso, 'M. SantoStefano', dated '9-2012' and titled, 'Deer Hill Road, Lafayette, CA'.
This Callifornia East Bay artist began painting when young but first studied formally in 2004 with Ann Marie Glover. She subsequently studied with Theresa Onoda and John Finger and too plein air painting lessons with Pam Glover. SantoStefano acknowledges, and is grateful for, the influence of the Society of Six and of Lundy and Louis Siegrist. Maria SantoStefano has exhibited widely and with success including at the Oakland Art Association and the AMFA Gallery and she has been the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards.
"I paint in oil because of its brilliance and dimensional qualities, and with every painting, I try to find the point where the beauty of the scene meets that of the medium. I paint outdoors because it is literally addictive and the beauty of Northern California is a gift." (interview with Maria SantoStefano).
