Maria Tordo
Under the Tree, Ramatuelle, South of France

1964

About the Item

Mid Century French oil on canvas view of the square in Ramatuelle, South of France by Maria Tordo. Signed bottom right, resigned, dated, titled and other details to the back of the canvas. Presented in fine Montparnasse frame. A wonderful colourful rendition of a characteristic 'place' or square in a French village, in this case Ramatuelle. An older person with their cane, sitting under a tree, its shade protecting them from the heat of the day. Tordo has used a riot of colour, contrasting against the green of the trees, to give the painting a wonderful vibrancy and energy. A really lovely painting full of joy. Maria Tordo, as well as being an accomplished artist noted for her vibrancy and colour was also a professor at the l'Opera Comique in Paris. She exhibited her work regularly including each year at the Salon des Independents in Paris.
