About the Item
This is an early and one of the finest Parisian paintings that Maurice Ferdinand Perrot produced during his long career. The scene depicts early morning light washing the area along the Seine, the view across to Notre Dame and the edge of the Ile Saint-Louis. Dating to the early 1920’s, the oil on canvas is in very good condition and signed lower right. There is activity along the Quai and it is awash with warm light and long shadows. The vivid colors and perspective that Perrot used produced an unusually beautiful late summer Parisian setting that is quite different than the standard view of Notre Dame.
Maurice Ferdinand Perrot was born in 1892 in nearby Verneuil Seine-et Oise. His father was mayor of the town. Perrot was trained at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and specialized in portraits, nudes and Parisian and regional French landscapes. He began to exhibit his works in 1923 at the Paris Salon. He died in 1974.
The painting has had some professional repairs as evidenced from the rear side with several patches visible. It measures 15 3/4” x 23 1/4” and presents very well. It is framed in a recent traditional gold frame with a wide and shaped profile. The overall framed measurements are 21 3/4” x 29 1/4”. The frame is in very good condition and pairs well with the painting.
