About the Item
The work of Durieux has been characterized in the last 25 years by the tranquil French landscapes. His enthusiasts enjoy it and stand in the gallery with their nose on top of the drawings and paintings. However, there is a special novelty to report for this exhibition! Peter Durieux signed again in the Netherlands. Anyone who knows the artist knows that his drawings are the source for the paintings he makes. These drawings, made in the landscape, form an important part in the oeuvre of the Groningen artist. The "plein air draftsman" draws a few mornings or afternoons per drawing to the same place. He records how the light shows the landscape. It is important for Durieux that the light is the same as the day before, which is why the artist always opts for the same moments of the day in the same place. The tonal landscapes show a silence and an unparalleled intimacy.
Peter Durieux signed for this exhibition in Brabant on the Strabrechtse Heide (near Nuenen in Heeze) and in Groningen, the province where he lives. He made paintings from these drawings. In addition to the Dutch work, there is also new "French" work on display.
Drawing is watching.
Durieux's paintings and drawings are created in various steps. Peter studies his landscapes while he draws. "Drawing is watching," he likes to tell his students at the Classical Academy in Groningen. Twice a year he travels to "Le Coulet", a small hamlet in the French Ardêche. The surroundings of the hamlet, the villages and landscapes in the immediate vicinity have been established by Peter Durieux for years.
Peter does not find it annoying to always work in this same environment. During one of the many conversations I have had with Peter, he once said:
I walk and cycle less and less. In the past, if I searched for a place that I thought was suitable for drawing, I could spend half a day doing it. I needed the bike or walked a long way and after a lot of searching I found such a place. Nowadays I just have to leave the house at my place of residence. I see much more than before. Sometimes, when the light has disappeared from my composition, I only have to turn a quarter turn for the next drawing.
Peter works several days on a drawing. He is also working on several drawings at the same time. After all, the changing and rotating sunlight is a very important part of his composition. This means that he is in a different place in the morning than in the afternoon. There is a lot of light in the composition, but often not much air. It is wonderful to see how the light from the sky passes over the landscape. Often a sign of habitation can still be seen somewhere in the drawing. A house, wall, fence, sidewalks or stairs. People are not visible, but the presence can be felt.
The light changes during the day, it is amazing how Peter Durieux can even show in a drawing whether spring, autumn, morning light or afternoon light is what we see.

- MuskokanBy Robert MarchessaultLocated in Montreal, QuebecMy painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...Category
