Richard Ballinger
Richard Ballinger is a British landscape and still-life painter. “I do not draw in the landscape, I draw from it. It’s taken me inside, to the studio, imagining how it should be ... It's fun for me to make up relative scenarios about my life that will automatically create the right picture for me. Photographs, newspaper articles and books will sometimes help the process. Sometimes if the images are not right, a deconstruction will then take place. This is my favourite part of the journey — the shifting, sanding and scraping of paint, unearthing a brief history.” Ballinger's recent landscape paintings explore the theme of solace from the memories of a child. Although painted in Cornwall, where Ballinger has lived and worked since 1999, and occasionally informed by drawings, his series of brightly coloured, beautiful landscapes are symbolic meditations on formative experiences of a happy, carefree childhood in idyllic, rural Gloucestershire. In earlier works, he painted lonely figures in the landscape. Though in his more recent paintings, the figures within the paintings have been replaced by an obvious viewpoint for the imager, from the viewer. This avoids an overly determined narrative interpretation and encourages imaginative engagement. A protective wall of trees may stretch across the foreground, beyond which a thin line or path draws the eye up the picture plane towards the horizon. Perhaps like the artist as a child, we are taking refuge behind the trees, contemplating whether or not we dare to take the path into the unknown? "Ballinger’s images, constructed with often thick impasto paint, interlocking shapes or blocks of colour, a nod to the symbolic style of post-impressionist painters such as Paul Gauguin. His varied treatment of the painted surface, from the meticulous application of small brushstrokes to vigorous scraping away and scoring, evidences the painting process over time. On one level, then, happy memories of childhood freedoms — a time spent roaming the countryside seeking adventure and taking risks — might be seen as a perfect metaphor for the explorative act of painting itself." Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country. The artwork is signed in the bottom left corner. The landscape is a lovely pastel color composition, by the beach, on the French Atlantic coast nearby Cabourg or Deauville. Newly framed with a gray and green ceruse wood frame and a blue canvas matte. Measurements: With frame: 22.82 in. wide (58 cm) x 19.32 in. high (49 cm). Opening: 16.13 in. wide (41 cm) x 12.63 in. high (32 cm). About: André Hambourg was born in Paris on 5 May 1909. Entering the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in 1926, he studied sculpture under Paul Niclausse for four years. The young artist then entered the studio of Lucien Simon at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. While in the middle of his academic studies, Hambourg had his debut solo exhibition at the Galerie Taureau in Paris in 1928. He was only 19 years old. Because of the early recognition of his talent, Hambourg became active in major Paris salons in the first stages of his fledgling career. In 1931, he was made a member of the Salon de l’Art Français Indépendant and the Salon de l’Oeuvre Unique. The first of Hambourg’s many honors was the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif, awarded in 1933. As a result, the artist traveled to North Africa for the first time and spent nearly ten years working in Algeria and Morocco. The strong light of the sun, and the bleak poverty of this region, inspired Hambourg’s works. In 1937, he executed a large mural for the Algerian Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale of Paris. Throughout his years in North Africa, Hambourg would exhibit his paintings in numerous solo exhibitions in Algeria and Paris. In 1939, Hambourg was mobilized as a military reporter and draughtsman and worked on the staff of the Journal de Commissariat a la Guerre, the newspaper of the French army, under the pseudonym Andre Hache. Special missions on combat vessels led to his appointment as a war correspondent in 1944 with the staff of inter-allied SHAEF. As such, he participated in the campaigns of Germany, Alsace, the Atlantic front, and the Liberation of France. After returning to his artistic career for a short time, Hambourg became the official painter of the Navy in 1952. He undertook numerous voyages aboard French Navy vessels on missions worldwide, including Venice, the Soviet Union, Israel, Great Britain, The Ivory Coast, The United States, and Mexico. From these extended trips, the artist brought back numerous sketches and preparatory drawings for future paintings and illustrations. His international trips would have a lasting influence on his artwork. Hambourg’s adventurous maritime career resulted in his receiving the honor of Laureate of the Salon de la Marine and becoming the official painter of the Marine Ministry.
