Richard Britell
The Memory of So Beautiful A Day (Red Abstracted Landscape Oil Painting)

About the Item

70 x 40 x 1.5 inches vertical, monochromatic red landscape oil painting on canvas This large vertical rusty red and orange monochromatic landscape oil painting imparts feelings of romance and nostalgia while being definitively modern in color and composition. In the foreground, tall trees with their delicate foliage pepper the bright orange sky. In the background, a valley plunges into the horizon line. Mr. Britell's dreamy landscapes are dominated by a single color; their monochromatic hues of deep red, orange and yellow reflect off of loose brush strokes and gentle handling of the paint, a departure from this artist's typical hard edge realist painting technique. The edges of the work are painted so framing is not necessary. About the Artist: Richard Britell, a career painter, studied at Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher. His first show in NYC at Staempfli Gallery was sold out, and reviewed in the New York Times. Britell’s new works revolve around large, dreamy cityscapes tending toward abstraction. The artist currently lives in Pittsfield, MA. Richard Britell is represented by Gallery based in Hudson, NY. "My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
