About the artist:
Richard Ellis Wagner was born in 1923 to Warren and Myrtle Wagner, and grew up in Ohio. He learned woodworking craft skills from his father, who was a high school shop teacher and owned a travel trailer manufacturing company. In 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Fisher, and thus began a classic love story of partnership that lasted 64 years, until his death from bone cancer on Feb. 13, 2009. He attended Antioch College in Ohio and Manchester College in Indiana. He was a pre-med student, and during WWII served three years of alternative service in hospitals and forestry. After Evelyn gave him his first set of paints, he began a life-long career as a professional artist. After teaching at the University of Colorado, he became a professor of art for 13 years at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where their daughter, Gail, was born. He also established the Wagner School of Painting and Drawing, gave workshops, exhibited paintings nationally in many shows and also judged art shows. He had 67 one-man shows, including nine in New York City, 13 in New England and others in 10 states. He and Evelyn published two books of paintings and poetry.
