2024

About the Item

"Snow Days" by Rory J Browne is a captivating original landscape painting that transports viewers into the serene beauty of a winter landscape. Executed with skillful brushwork in oil on canvas, this artwork is a celebration of the artist's mastery of the Impressionist style. The composition unveils a tranquil winter scene, where the landscape is gently blanketed by pristine snow. The foreground features delicate plants, showcasing the resilience of nature in the face of the winter chill. Towering trees stand as sentinels, their branches adorned with the weight of the freshly fallen snow. The vacant sky above adds a sense of calm and stillness to the entire tableau. Rory J Browne's adept use of the Impressionist style is evident in the expressive strokes that capture the essence of a snowy day. The winter scene comes alive with the harmonious color scheme of white, blue, and earthy tones, creating a visually pleasing and serene atmosphere. The painting is adorned with the artist's signature, marking its authenticity and readiness for display. "Snow Days" is currently available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online, providing art enthusiasts with the opportunity to bring home this evocative piece that encapsulates the quiet charm of winter landscapes. Artist Biography: Rory J Browne graduated from Chelsea School of Art in 1988 and initially worked as a freelance artist mainly within the corporate sector. He specialises in painting vibrant and richly textured landscapes which often have a spiritual as well as a representational theme running through them. Rory has contributed to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition on a number of occasions. His work is featured in public and private collections both in the UK and abroad, including British Gas, Rank Xerox, London Borough of Barnet and Hertfordshire County Council. Rory has won a number of prestigious awards and been featured in numerous articles, including Country Living magazine (July 2007). A graduate of the Chelsea School of Art, Rory now lives in Harpenden, Hertfordshire with his wife and three sons. AWARDS 1994 Winner of the Apthorp Award for Young Artists Paintings purchased for the London Borough of Barnet 1992 Finalist in Department of Transport Competition 1991 – 1992 Finalist in Hunting Observer Art Competition, highly Commended 1991 Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award 1990 First Prize and Category Award in Artist at Work Competition 1988 The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award. Through my paintings I seek primarily to reflect the vibrancy and beauty of the created world around us. But they also often allude to a spiritual theme as well as a representational one. This reflects my belief that our inherent creativity is itself a reflection of a creator God, whose work we see in landscape but who is also deeply concerned for human needs and the individual. It is my intention within each work to capture a sense of time and place. I would hope to present the viewer with a distilled image that would elicit a response of: “I’ve been there …” If my work achieves this sort of response, then it has done the job that I set out to do. My hope is also that as you browse through the site, you will not see just pictures and images, but find peace and meaning in the midst of your busy and demanding life.

Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
