Steve Capper attended Manchester’s High School of Art in 1955, the Manchester College of Art in 1962 and Bretton Hall College in 1965. He taught painting for thirty years as head of a large art faculty in an Oldham comprehensive school, before taking early retirement in 1996 to concentrate on producing his own work.
Capper produces on-the-spot sketches which are then taken into his studio where he re-works them into a painting. Both his landscapes and his still-life paintings reflect the influences of the cubists and the fauves. The work of Picasso, Braque and Matisse are amongst his major influences.
Capper still lives and works near Oldham, in the Pennines, UK, and these hills have had a major influence upon his work. The shapes and patterns of this landscape provide an ideal vehicle for his work with colour. His use of primary colour both enhances and emphasises the fascinating aspects of this special environment.

Taking queues from Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism, through juxtaposing nature-inspired fields of color over earth-like stained and textured canvas, the autobiographical works are rooted in landscape and lean toward abstraction. Bernstrom’s paintings, with their complex, earth-like surfaces, evoke an emotional response that directs viewers toward a consciousness of their place in the natural world, and perhaps also encourage better care of the Earth. Born and raised in Sweden, Charlotte was mentored by her grandfather, the painter Lennart Schultzberg. He started teaching her plein air painting when she was five years old. He came up with innovative ways of teaching a young child perspective, color theory and to use different mediums. She learned about seeing, listening, feeling and how to translate those qualities through paint. Charlotte was influenced and inspired by an environment filled with art.
