Green Fields

This is the beautiful island Santa Rosa, one of the Channel Islands Sanctuary islands just off the California mainland. This vast stretch is adorned with a variety of fiery wildflowers stretching far and wide, like a musical composition of various themes and in different voices. Santa Rosa is home to an incredible array of birds and marine life. It is a narrow but spreading landscape ribboned with trails, each one seemingly in the manner of a flight or chase, repeating the same melody in a slight variation. The cliffs drop hundreds of feet to the crashing swells of ocean below, home to historic shipwrecks peacefully intact. Eventually the lure of California drew her back to California. Ms. Torres has been an instructor of art workshops at Idyllwild Arts, Carnegie Art Museum, Studio Channel Islands Art Center,, Collage Artists Of America, the Ventura County Art Museum, University of California/Riverside, She has exhibited in solo and group shows including: Palm Springs Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Ventura Music Festival Invitational, Channel Islands Sanctuary, San Luis Obispo Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Marion Meyer Contemporary Art, Laguna Beach, CA, East/West One, Invitational, inThousand Oaks, CA, Ventura Government Center Invitational, Ventura, CA. Sylvia was interviewed live and her history video recorded by Donna Granata, founder of Focus On The Masters. Sylvia’s video history is permanently documented in their archives. A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40".
