Au Lac. Large Naive Acrylic on Board.

1970s

About the Item

Large Naïve acrylic on board attributed to a French artist named Le Bris as the work was bought with another painting signed by the artist. The painting is presented in a gilt wooden baton frame. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. The characteristics of naïve art have a challenging relationship to the formal qualities of painting, especially as they tend not to respect the three rules of the perspective (such as defined by the Progressive Painters of the Renaissance): 1. Decrease of the size of objects proportionally with distance, 2. Muting of colours with distance, 3. Decrease of the precision of details with distance. The results are: Effects of perspective are geometrically erroneous (distinctive aspect of the works, like the drawing of a child, or the look of medieval painting). Strong use of pattern, unrefined colour on all the plans of the composition, without enfeeblement in the background. An equal accuracy brought to details, including those of the background which should be shaded off. Simplicity rather than subtlety are all supposed markers of naïve art. It has, however, become such a popular and recognizable style that many examples could be called pseudo-naïve.

  • French Impressionist View of Paris, Le Pont Marie and Île Saint-Louis
    Located in Cotignac, FR
French Impressionist oil on board view of a fisherman at the riverbank of the Seine in Paris next to the Bridge St Marie, with the old spire of Notre Dame in the distance. The painting is initial signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a patinated wood frame. There is a trade label for the Rowley Gallery in Kensington Church Street to the backboard. A charming Impressionist painting of an iconic Parisian view. The Seine with all its reflected colours passing beneath the arches of an ancient bridge, a church spire just visible through the canopy of the trees, colourful boats moored, a fisherman sitting in the shade of the riverbank hopeful of a catch. The artist has managed to capture all the languid, quiet beauty of the scene in the midst of a bustling metropolis which is Paris. The water in the Seine is full of colour and nuance and the green of the trees give the painting a freshness. A very accomplished composition beautifully executed. Le Pont Marie crossing the Seine in Paris. The bridge links the Île Saint-Louis to the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville and is one of three bridges designed to allow flow between the Île Saint-Louis and the Left and Right banks...
