About the Item
Early 19th century. Fantasy landscape with a pyramid and sphinx on a pedestal in the spirit of the architectural capriccios of Huber Robert.
Oil on cardboard.
In an original antique frame from the first half of the 19th century.
A long annotation on the reverse side of the painting speaks of its purchase and, apparently, further gift in the 1830s.
The painting is small in size, in good condition, recently professionally cleaned of old painterly varnish by an experienced restorer.
Idealized landscape: Happy Arcadia, where small human figures disappear into the landscape. filled with quotes from ancient architecture. Pastoral landscape with an idealization of life in the lap of nature.
It's bizarre to see a mixture of dreams about Ancient Greece, Egypt and Italy in one work.
It's a kind of Egyptomania with a slightly Italian taste.
