Landscape View Of St. Peter's Basilica Oil Paint Rome Grand Tour Style 19th

after 1800

About the Item

An impressive view of St Peter's Basilica and of the square with the the obelisk and the colonnade, painted from the Spina di Borgo. After the construction desired by Pope Alexander VI in the imminence of the Jubilee of 1500 of the Via Alessandrina, with the subsequent transformations called Borgo Nuovo by the Romans, the buildings of the Borgo were delimited by two streets (converging in the shape of a wedge) called Borgo Nuovo the one north, and Borgo Vecchio, the one to the south. The result was an urban layout with an elongated triangular shape with the tip facing Castel Sant'Angelo, which, due to its resemblance to that of the spina of a Roman circus, took the name of "Spina di Borgo".In the following centuries there were numerous intentions of the popes aimed at demolishing the plug with projects by well-known architects (among these: Carlo Fontana in 1692, Cosimo Morelli in 1776 and Giuseppe Valadier visible from a drawing from 1812). However, we had to wait until the first decades of the twentieth century to return to concretely discussing the demolition of the spina: the works continued from 1936, when, on the basis of a project developed by Marcello Piacentini and Attilio Spaccarelli, via della Conciliazione was built, until 1950 , on the occasion of the jubilee.
